Guided or self-guided tours, sensory workshops... There's something for everyone at the Hôtel-Dieu with the DE L'ESPRIT HOSPITALIER triptych.

The DE L'ESPRIT HOSPITALIER triptych will be rolled out from 2026 to 2028 in three key words: MOVEMENT(S) of bodies, PASSION(S) of souls and LANGUAGE(S) of care.

In 2026, we create MOVEMENT(S) to appreciate ‘cared-for bodies’ and ‘caring bodies’. From advances in medicine to the current approaches of healthcare professionals, from transformations in the built heritage to restorations and interior design, from the creation of the Wine Auction to movie sets, from meetings with the Hospices Civils de Beaune hospital staff to exchanges with enthusiasts of the site, the Hôtel-Dieu can be seen, heard, touched and tasted.

MOVEMENT(S) of hands to heal, create and transcribe, of jaws to savour, of lips to express oneself or remain silent, of bodies that move or atrophy, of buildings and objects that withstand the test of time and climate, of eyes that observe or scrutinise, of an ear that listens, of the other that interprets, of arms that open or close...

MOVEMENT(S) is an invitation to sense and feel the spirit of the place, each according to their emotions, thoughts and history. It is a shared Hôtel-Dieu we offer to you, a
living, hospitable heritage in flux, with periodic movements that are part of the perpetual movement of human history.

About | Discover the Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices Civils de Beaune, a hospital founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to the Dukes of Burgundy, and his 3rd wife, Guigone de Salins. A charitable institution entrusted to the care of hospitable ladies, this ‘palace for the poor’ was dedicated to wanderers and the sick without resources; it remained in operation until 1971.    Known for its polychrome glazed terracotta roofs, the Hôtel-Dieu is a major landmark in the history of hospitals, with its polyptych of the ‘Last Judgement’ by Rogier van der Weyden, its treatment rooms, kitchen, apothecary and collections of furniture and objets d'art. To help you explore the site, the following visitor resources are available: > Audioguide: follow Nicolas Rolin and Guigone de Salins as they recount the creation of their hospital and its evolution over the centuries (10 languages for adults / 4 languages for children / 2 audio description versions) > Educational booklet in French only L’Hôtel-Dieu au XIXe siècle: un hôpital en MOUVEMENT(S)

About | From the Hôtel-Dieu to the Hospices Civils de Beaune, discover the history of this iconic heritage site in the Duchy of Burgundy. The building, designed by its founders in 1443, was gradually expanded over the centuries by benefactors who wanted to accommodate more patients and adapt the site's facilities to advances in healthcare.  Each era saw major changes. The 19th century was marked by significant medical advances, the creation of the Hospices de Beaune wine auction, and the first restoration work on the medieval hospital. This period saw the modernisation of healthcare, the development of financial resources and the promotion of the Hôtel-Dieu's heritage. As you walk through the historic rooms, appreciate the interior design, observe the everyday objects, study the medical instruments, discover the collections, and let yourself be carried away by the MOVEMENT(S) of centuries of activity, an expression of a living hospital heritage.
