WHAT CAN YOU SEE AT THE HÔTEL-DIEU?
The Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices Civils de Beaune is a living hospital heritage site.

Founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor of the Dukes of Burgundy, and his wife Guigone de Salins, the Hôtel-Dieu is a charitable institution that has endured for nearly six centuries thanks to the generosity of its donors and benefactors. A "palace for the poor" dedicated to the destitute sick, it remained in operation until 1971.

A jewel of Burgundian architecture, renowned for its polychrome glazed roofs, it is a major site of hospital memory. As you walk through the rooms, the centuries unfold from the 15th to the 21st century: you will find the polyptych of the Last Judgment by Rogier van der Weyden (†1464), painted for the chapel of the Salle des Pôvres-restored in the Gothic spirit by Maurice Ouradou (1872-1878); the Saint-Hugues room decorated around 1645 by Isaac Moillon (1614–1673); the kitchen; the apothecary with its 130 faience jars dated 1782, adjoining the laboratory; as well as collections of furniture, tapestries, works of art, and medical instruments, notably in the Saint-Louis room.

The annual program highlights the values of care and sharing, linking caregivers, patients, and visitors. Touring the site is an invitation to reconnect past and present, to share perspectives, and to question the future we aspire to.
