About this tour | Discover the Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices Civils de Beaune, a hospital founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to the Dukes of Burgundy, and his third wife, Guigone de Salins. A charitable institution entrusted to the care of hospitable ladies, this ‘palace for the poor’ was dedicated to vagrants and the sick without resources; it remained in operation until 1971.  Known for its polychrome glazed terracotta roofs, the Hôtel-Dieu is a major landmark in the history of hospitals, with its polyptych of the ‘Last Judgement’ by Rogier van der Weyden, its treatment rooms, kitchen, apothecary and collections of furniture and works of art.
